Viña San Pedro has been creating wines in Chile for almost one hundred and fifty years. A pioneer in the past and a present-day innovator in the New World, it has helped in building an industry from Elqui to Bío-Bío.
Founded in year 1865, Viña San Pedro is nowadays one of the largest and oldest exporters of Chilean wine and one of the most important wineries in the country.
San Pedro’s main vineyard, wine cellar and hundred-year-old underground cava cellar are located in Molina, in Curicó Valley, 200 Km. south of Santiago. There, San Pedro has one of the largest stretches of vineyards in Latin America, with 1,200 hectares.
Parallelly, San Pedro has over 1,500 planted hectares in Central Valley and in the other main vine-growing valleys in Chile, such as Elqui, Casablanca, San Antonio-Leyda, Maipo, Cachapoal, Maule and Bío-Bío, always in the quest for new and better origins for its wines.
Viña San Pedro is part of the so-called VSPT Wine Group winemaking group, the third largest vitivinicultural group in Chile and the second largest exporter of Chilean wine.
Its exploratory, pioneering nature and pursuit of extreme origins led it to incorporate the Elqui Valley in 2006, which is the origin of the Castillo de Molina Sauvignon Blanc as well as the Limited Edition Syrah from the 1865 range. It is also one of the first large wineries to help revive the Itata Valley in 2013.
Its portfolio includes the brands Cabo de Hornos, Kankana del Elqui, Tierras Moradas, 1865 Single Vineyard, 1865 Lmited Edition, Castillo de Molina, 35 South and GatoNegro, which enjoy vibrant success in the most competitive markets.
Other projects, such as Los Despedidos, have prompted San Pedro to engage with less commercial varieties such as Cinsault, País and Dolcetto.
Wines Phillipe Dandurand presented in Montreal the portfolio of Ultra Premium wines from Viña San Pedro.
Béatrice restaurant was the venue for this event, led by Claudia Martinez Gomez, marketing director of Viña San Pedro. She talked about the wines and the philosophy of the company and the differences between Sideral, 1865 and Cabo de Hornos.
My favorite wine of the night was Sideral 2015, a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Carménère, 3% Syrah and 2% Petit Verdot.
Ruby-red in color, the wine is highly intense on the nose with red fruits and cherries intertwined with light cedar hints resulting from aging in barrels. On the palate, the wine is characterized by elegance, round tannins and a vibrant acidity which gives for freshness and juiciness. The attack is smooth but with good tannin structure. A very fruity, complex wine with excellent persistence.
The wine has fantastic aging potential, meaning it will increase in complexity throughout its time in the bottle. Sideral was matched with a nice Tuscan Pecorino, fresh figs, walnuts and fig jam.
Other very interesting wine was the 1865 Syrah Limited Edition 2014. These Syrah vineyards are located at 700 meters above the sea level in the Elqui Valley.
This special terroir’s characteristics include lower temperatures than traditional Chilean wine regions that helps to obtain wines with greater fruit expression and softer more complex tannins.
Complex, fruity and at the same time, spicy. With outstanding aromas of black fruits, such as plums and boysenberries, well interlaced with notes to fresh meat, violets, black pepper, olives, blond tobacco and a hint of cedar.
This is a silky and elegant wine, with great structure and balance. Likewise, it is a very mineral wine, gifted with rich acidity and ripe tannins, juiciness and a long finish. Ready to be enjoyed immediately, or hold for 5 to 8 years. It’s perfect to pair with lamb shank.
