Installed since 1998, Matthieu BARRET, exploits 16 ha planted on terraces exposed towards the Levant in “Cornas” appellation, and he has the ambition to create 100% grape’s terroir wines.
In the vineyard organic and biodynamic culture are practiced, the inputs are limited to their strict minimum. Soil work by ploughing and scrapings, mainly done by animal traction with mules and horses.
The selection of Syrah for this wine came from old and young vines located throughout the estate with the exception of the parcels of Billes Noires and Gore. The granite soils here are very degraded and clayey-silty strip for the bottom slop.
The purity of the fruit is due in part to its 18 months of maturation, which combined the use of ovoid concrete tanks and 500 litre barrels.
This is a Cornas that delivers admirably following a decanting. The mouth is superb, lusty and gentle with notes of blackberry, black plum, violet, lavender and raw meat. Medium weight with soft tannins, very elegant and balanced with a medium finish.
Definitely accessible, but wine will reveal about at their four years old. This selection of Cornas is contemporary and has to be delivered faster pleasure than a classic Cornas. Cellaring potential is 10 to 15 years.
