Bodegas Luis Cañas is a family-owned winery that dates back to 1928, although the family has been in the grape-growing and winemaking business for more than two centuries. Today it is one of the leading wineries of Rioja Alavesa.
At Luis Cañas, the vinification process starts with 222 acres of their own Tempranillo, Viura, Graciano, and Mazuelo vineyards and another 494 acres controlled by their regular grape suppliers. The vineyards are divided into 815 separate plots of land at an altitude of 1,300 to 1,640 feet above sea level.

🍇 Tempranillo 85%, Other varieties 15%. The vineyards have an average age of 45 years.🍷 20 months in new barrels, 50% French oak and 50% American oak.
The 2012 Reserva Seleccion de la Familia shows a deep red cherry color. Intense and very complex on the nose, with aromas of ripe black fruit, cigar box, eucalyptus and leather. Spice and earthy nuances mixed with vanilla notes. It is ample on the palate, with plenty of volume, holding well in the mid palate showing liquorice and bitter chocolate notes. The finish is frankly tannic, but fairly well balanced.
